The International Workshop on Sea Ice Modelling, Assimilation, Observations, Predictions and Verification held since 2008, focuses on sea ice from the point of view of modelling, assimilation, observations, and predictions on short (daily to sub-seasonal) time scales. It is a joint workshop of the International Ice Charting Working Group (IICWG), the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, the EUMETSAT Ocean and Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF), the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative for Sea Ice (ESA CCI), and the Sea Ice Retrieval and Data Assimilation in Norway (SIRANO).

The workshop aims to discuss the cross-cutting issues in sea ice modelling, assimilation and observations and the efficient way to diagnose and address the deficiencies of current systems. The 11th meeting was hosted by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, in Oslo, Norway during 21-22-23 March 2023 (https://iicwg-da-11.met.no/).

Welcome presentation of Thomas Lavergne

Xia Lin from Earth and Life Institute at UCLouvain attended this workshop in Oslo and presented a poster about the Sea Ice Evaluation Tool (SITool). The SITool is developed to help diagnose the sea ice model simulations in a more efficient way. The details of the poster can be found at Zenodo. Many colleagues are interested in this work and discussed about the application to their studies. This is a really great opportunity for her to learn and communicate with sea ice groups. The most impressive part is that machine learning and data assimilation applications on sea ice take up an increasingly large portion of the research. If you are interested in the recent research on this topic, check out full details of the presentations and posters here.

Xia is grateful to have this amazing opportunity to participate in this workshop. She enjoyed the trip to Oslo and cannot forget the fantastic food there. The city is very convenient for travelers to visit with unique views in March. She visited the National Museum and was touched by this painting <Girls on the bridge> of Edvard Munch.
